YOUR TEXAS DRIVING RESOURCE

Let’s find your next step.

A simple plan based on your age, education, and driving experience. No account or personal identifiers needed.

What this planner can tell you

Answer questions about age, previous licenses, education and your next goal. The result organizes likely next steps and links to DPS or TDLR. It does not check government records, approve eligibility, book a test or authorize driving. Do not enter a license number or personal identifiers.

The main Texas routes

Teens normally begin classroom education at 14 and the learner-license stage at 15. The provisional route at 16–17 includes education, supervised practice and a learner holding period. First-time adults ages 18–24 generally need the six-hour course if they have not already satisfied education requirements. Driver education is optional at 25 or older. A previous license can change these steps.

Adults do not choose a new teen education route here. If you already completed or started education, confirm your certificate and remaining requirements with the provider and DPS before buying a replacement. Existing, expired, suspended and foreign licenses are referred to DPS for an individual determination.
