Texas restriction B: supervised driving for adults

Understand the front-seat supervision rule, prepare for practice, and confirm how DPS will update your license.

What restriction B means

DPS defines restriction B as requiring a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat. If it appears on your Class C credential, follow it every time you drive. A friend following in another vehicle, a supervisor on a phone call, or an adult in the back seat does not satisfy that front-seat requirement.

The letter B is a restriction code here. A Class B license is a different vehicle-license classification. Check both the class and restrictions on the document DPS actually issued; do not rely on what someone casually calls a “permit.”

Before your first practice

Confirm the credential is valid and read every printed restriction. Ask your supervisor to bring a valid license and choose a roadworthy, properly insured vehicle. Check coverage with the insurer rather than assuming that a borrowed vehicle covers every driver. Agree on a quiet route, early directions and a safe place to stop if the task becomes too demanding.

A six-hour course certificate is evidence of education, not permission to practice on public roads. If you do not yet have the appropriate credential, use the DPS application instructions before driving.

Use supervision to build independent decisions

Start with controls, low-speed movement and a simple route. Ask the supervisor to give the destination early, then observe rather than narrate every movement. Discuss nonurgent corrections while parked. If control requires repeated urgent intervention, simplify the task or arrange professional instruction.

After the skills test

Ask DPS what is required to remove the restriction and obtain the updated credential. Passing a test, including a third-party test, does not itself change the text on your license. Continue following your current restrictions until DPS authorizes the change. Keep test results and required documents in the format your testing provider and DPS specify.

If your history is more complicated

An expired or suspended credential, previous Texas license or foreign license needs individual DPS guidance. This guide explains the B supervision rule; it cannot determine reinstatement, transfer eligibility or your legal status. Use the license planner to organize questions, not as proof of driving authorization.
